Acker is best known for his translation of a lengthy medieval Chinese history of painters (two vols, 1954 & 1974), first compiled in 847 (some seven centuries before everyone’s favourite art historian, the Florentine Giorgio Vasari published his Lives of the Painters, Sculptors etc in 1550 – the two texts have many obvious points of comparison.) Before and after the outbreak of WW2 Acker lived in Chongqing (Chungking), China’s wartime capital in Sichuan from where it conducted its fight against Japan. Acker himself practiced calligraphy and painted. Chongqing provided fertile opportunities for art collecting, since high-status refugees from many walks of Chinese life congregated there. Despite the war—perhaps before the critical year of 1937 when Japan opened full-blown hostilities against China—Acker also had opportunity to collect calligraphy by Japanese and Korean friends then resident in China.
